Synthetic tack in the Hunter ring?
I am looking into purchasing a show saddle to be used for hunter/jumper. Because I lease (and I may change horses and don't want to buy a new saddle for each horse) I want a saddle with the changeable gullet system. I really like Bates Caprilli Jumping Saddle but it costs almost $2,000. I found a place that I can buy the Wintec Close Contact Jumping Saddle which is the same saddle just it is synthetic for $500. I know that Hunter showing is very snobbish (at least it is where I live) and what I want to know is, will using a synthetic saddle be noticeable (and considered cheap) and is it a better idea to just save up for the Bates Caprilli? If anyone has any experience with either saddle I would like to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks!

In theory, the type of saddle you are riding in shouldn't effect your scores in any discipline. You SHOULD be judged on your performance and horse's way of going. Unfortunately, these days, your horses breed, color, tack, even the brands of clothes on your body are often taken into consideration. If you are talking about american show hunters, and want to be competitive, don't waste your time on the wintec. Save your money for the Bates because you will be docked by judges, even at the local level. (I hate to say this but come on, we all know the truth). If you live anywhere else in the world and are talking about riding jumpers, the wintec should be fine. Especially for the lower levels. I think either way, you should buy used. There are great deals out there, you just have to keep looking and waiting. Try E-bay. I was looking for a hermes and after 3 months, one came up in my price range and I got it. You just have to check every day and keep your eyes and ears open at tack shops. Good luck on your purchase.
