Whip Crop

Choosing a riding crop.?

Alright, So I just got back from a Greenhawk store and I remember my Horseback riding teacher telling me I should have a longer crop for jumping. I had a crop and it was quite short but it was a jumping crop but the horse that I usually jump is quite lazy and I usually need to crop her on the butt right before the jumps. But I find it difficult because the jump is usually on a tight turn and it's hard to crop her right before jumping. So when I got to the shop they didn't have any good jumping crops that were longer. So I bought a dressage crop, well whip. And I was wondering if I could use that to jump with. By the way I do not do shows this is just for lessons and for fun. And I'm not sure if the horses are used to them.

A dressage whip for jumping outside of shows is fine.. Just make sure to keep it on your hip when you are not using it, as if you simply leave it hanging down like a short crop you can tap your horses legs over a jump or on the flat, catch the bar with it and lose the whip (depending on the height of the jump), or just have it in such a position that it brushes against your horse when you don't want it to. With jumpier horses, this is a recipe for trouble. So keep your whip on your leg when you are not using it, and practice with it so you can switch it to the other side comfortably (it's harder than it looks!)
