Therapeutic Saddle
Am i ready to lease a horse?
Hi, and thanks for taking the time to answer my question!
I currently volunteer at a therapeutic riding center, where they also lease out their program horses for 150$ a month (this includes farrier, vet, tack, all expenses) and I can ride whenever the horse isn't being used in the program. Here is my experience:
I can halter and saddle efficiently (they can teach me to bridle)
I know how to groom and pick hooves
I've gone to a week-long camp every summer since 3rd grade (I'm currently 13, going into 8th grade) and will be going to another week of camp next Sunday.
Walking is extremely easy, trotting is easy, and cantering is pretty good- I just learned last year, and I was a natural, and will probably be very good at it after this coming week at camp.
So, do you think I sound ready to head out on the trails with just me and a friend (who is also a good rider) or even alone?
yes it sounds like you're ready. but just a warning - it's alot of work. if you have the time and the knowledge then you are ready. it seems you are really good with the basics of horse kowledge and are willing to learn more. leasing gives you the option (but just a warning - the owner can take the horse back... i had that happen to me without notice. they're technically suppose to give you notice but w/e we bought the best horsey i could ever ask for
) but yeah i guess you can go on a trail. just always go with someone when you go on a trail. i would never go alone just because you don't know what's going to happen and it's always a good thing to have at least one person with you even if you're a really experienced rider and have an amazing horse - for that your horse could spook, you could fall off, or you could get hurt. you never know so never ride alone even if you're the most experienced rider at the barn. the most experienced rider should know that he/she should never ride alone for that fact
. but yes if you're willing, go for it! and thats awesome that you are willing to take the next step!
~ good luck and have fun with your horse!
