English Jump
Tuesday, July 27th, 2010I have a Olde English Bulldog and she is just jumping on people and I'm trying to get to his stop in what way?
I tried to put my knees to the chest and a lite smack on the nose with a piece of paper and a bottle with water, and none of them work!
First, realize that this is your dog to greet people. She is not trying to be a parasite, it is rather trying recognize the presence of everyone telling them how happy she is seeing someone she respects both. Dogs have a special way learning, like children. If your dog is chewing a shoe of yours and you enter the room and start shouting and waving arms around, your dog does not realize that you are angry. In fact, she will see what the praise, or an invitation to play. If you react to your dog when she jumps (by pushing down, talking to him, etc.), you are the reward for his actions. One thing you can try the tactic IGNORE. Just to ignore it when it jumps. You back on foot. Do not recognize the word, touch or eye contact with her. Finally, she will see that his behavior is ungrateful and it will stop. This is especially important when you go home. Instead of greeting immediately, give him fifteen minutes to calm down and then contact her. The second method of treatment is called redirection. Try taking the dog on a walk. Bring a favorite toy or treat. When you see someone on the point, and when you see she is ready to pounce, the redirect in launching his toy, or dropping the treat. This will take his mind off jumping. Try this exercise several times a day. Also, at home, it would be useful to hold a toy / treat near the door. When someone happens, use this same tactic to redirect the dog. After she calmed down, you can go to his praise. Soon she will see that is a greater reward if it does not skip. (If it does not respond well to toys / processing, get a toy KONG and things so with wet food or peanut butter. Set this as a guest arrives, it will be extremely distracting to try to get food. This works best if it is around a meal time or if the dog is hungry.) If you are a dominant dog or puppy determind, you can use deterrence. Like water, sound, smell or taste. You can use any something like a water pistol or a spray bitter apple. Simply when the adverse action Proforms dog jumping, a quick release spray water in his face, or if you prefer deterrence perfume, spray a little bitter apple in the air around the dog (not in the dog's face). In doing so, the dog will find that there is no jumping up and gratuity, and he actually became a very undesriable action for the puppy. Sure that when recycling, everyone is consistent in this regard. If you have guests over, inform them not to respond to it (the method IGNORE). You have friends come to deal with in their pockets, ready to throw for your dog (the method of redirection). Make sure the guest is aware of how to use the spray / gourd (digging).
