Stirrups Pads
bare back pads, what are the limitations?
im interested in getting my horse a bare back pad simply because i enjoy riding him bare back but on occasion i would like the security of stirrups to work him more effectively.
my questions is, what are there limitations as to how long and the type of work that i can do with my horse with a bare back pad? i ride him generally every other day for about an hour and that is usually an hour hack with some canter work.
Bareback pads are great for giving you a little extra cushion on a high witherbone, and a little more grip for you legs. However! I know this has already been said but I would like to reiterate it: Do not do not do not use the stirrups! IMHO, stirrups on a bareback pad are one of the most dangerous (and asinine!) inventions in horse tack history. Just always keep in mind, it's a pad, not a saddle. You cannot use it or ride it like a saddle. So if you forget it's there and ride the horse, not the equipment, you'll really enjoy it.
I loved using mine on my old mare. She had a killer of a witherbone, even when she was younger, and the pad made riding her so much more enjoyable. I didn't hesitate to walk, trot, canter, lope, jump, and even flat out RUN. I've even herded horses out of pasture and back to the barn. Granted I was a lot younger and in much better shape at the time! 
Anything you feel comfortable doing bareback you can do with a pad.
P.S. I would, however, recommend changing the girth. Many of the girths I've seen on bareback pads are just nylon straps, which won't tighten and cause the pad to slip right out from under you when you shift your weight. I used a plain roping cinch, off-side billet, and latigo for mine. MUCH safer! Not to mention easier on the horse's skin/haircoat!
