running martingale is used for jumpers
and the first person who answered is stupid

but if the horse bolts or w/e u have complete control it doesnt change the strength/control u have of the horse
it just makes it so they cant throw their head in the air
anywho
the running martingale like i said is for jumpers, more slack, but it makes it so they throw their head up in the air
and the standing martingale is used for hunters/eq horses bcuz it makes them keep their head lower and even over the jump it makes them keep their head lower

u shouldnt have the standing martingale so tight that there is no give, that would scare the crap out of horses, have it tight enough so they cant throw their heads in the air (very unnattractive) and loose anough so it doesnt scare them
and also if u want to keep ur horse in more of a frame i suggest draw reins, it keeps their head low but its basically the easy way haha
and horses dont know whether they have them on or not, they arent that smart
they will learn to naturally keep their head in the proper position bcuz the muscle will grow in that position
if ur horse is first learning or jsut weak about getting in a frame then i suggest keeping them in a frame for 5-10 mins a day then giving them a break and such, it is just like training urself to run for long distance, u have to do it slowly
also after u are done hacking try to get them lowww so it stretches their back and neck
basically like stretching after u workout for horses =D
