Snaffle Copper
Which snaffle bit for my horse?
I have a 5 year old who has been out of training for 3 months and was told to use a D snaffle ring on him. I bought a off set dee ring stainless steel and he is just not taking to it. After doing research I have learned of two and cannot figure which one to use. A sweet iron dee ring or the copper dee ring. Any advice would sure be appreciated.
I have also checked out John Lyons and he uses the full cheek snaffle bit and sells them in copper or stainless. Any ideas on this. Horse.com sells the stainless a bit cheaper.
It depends on what you mean by "not taking to it." Assuming his teeth have been recently checked - - remember he's losing and getting new teeth still, at this point - - if you mean he doesn't want to take the bit, that's one problem, if he's not responding well once you're riding, that's a different answer. Generally, though, either a sweet iron or copper overlay snaffle is liked by most horses as they're sort of sweet. Try a french link instead of a single joint. Make sure your snaffle is a snaffle and not a jointed bit with shanks, sometimes incorrectly called a snaffle in the western jargon. If his teeth and mouth are in good shape, you'll just need to experiment with different bits, and even a bitless bridle (I like Cook's) Good luck!
EDIT: I like John Lyons, a lot. Try the copper full cheek he sells, if you want. I don't know if his prices are good. You might find a good quality one at your local tack shop for less. Anyway, that's your choice.
