Snaffle Bridle
I put a bridle on my young horse for the first time- is what he did normal?
I've never bridled a young horse that has never been bridled until today. I did manag to get him to take the bit. I used a simple snaffle. The bridle fit alright and so did the bit. He didn't freak out really... I left it on him for about fifteen minutes without the reins and let him wander around. For the whole time he constantly played with the bit. He chewed it, kept opening his mouth and tried rubbing it off on the post. He wasn't scared or anything... he's just like 'this is annoying.. I don't like having metal shoved in my mouth'. I'm just checking, this is a normal way for a horse to act their first time wearing a bridle right?
Yeah completely normal - it's a whole new consept to a young horse having a bit in their mouth, so for the first few times they are going to find it difficult to cope with - but be consistent and they'll soon get the hang of it.
To make it easier, you might want to get hold of a proper mouthing bit with keys - these encourage the horse to play with the bit and salivate, which in turn warms the bit up in their mouths and makes it easier for them to get the hang of it.
