smith and wesson 3000 shotgun interchangeable parts ?
i recently acquired a smith and wesson model 3000 12g. as you may know its a 30yr old model and its hard to find parts to mod this weapon the replacement parts are easy enough but the upgrades are few and far between as i am new in the shotgun world im wondering what shotgun accessories are compatible with my old but new to me shotgun.... looking for a Barrel Shroud, Magazine Extension & a Side Saddle Shell Carrier... a note on the side carrier the tac-star WLS 2000 comes with one but how do i know if it will fit my shotgun?
You will find universal fitting barrel shrouds on several websites as well as magazine extensions made by Choate for your shotgun.
As for the shell carrier, they are attached to the shotgun by removing the pins that hold the trigger group in place and replaced with machine screws that come with the carrier.
If you can't find one already drilled with the correct hole spacing for your model (which I doubt you will) it's a pretty simple task to remove the trigger group, hold the carrier to the side of the receiver where you want to mount it and then slide a punch in through the opposite side of the receiver to mark the carrier where you will have to drill and tap new mounting holes in the aluminum plate.
Keep in mind that mounting a shell carrier to the receiver also requires a shorter pump forend. You will have to cut off a short portion of the forend if it hits the carrier when you open the action fully to allow proper function of the shotgun.
When mounting the carrier, don't overly tighten the screws or you'll compress the receiver onto the trigger group possibly causing firing malfunctions.
Your shotgun was manufactured by Howa in Japan for Smith & Wesson, and if I remember correctly, uses an aluminum receiver rather than a steel one. You can check that with a magnet.
In 1986, Mossberg bought the rights from Smith and Wesson to manufacture that shotgun at their plant in Japan and designated it the M-3000.
Any accessories you see for that Mossberg model will also fit what you have.
