Round Raised
What is a good material to use for curved raised beds?
We need to curve a raised bed around an existing flat brick drive. The drive was put down well and we don't want to disturb it, but we do need to create at least a foot & half high raised bed as the ground soil is solid clay.
So we need something that will curve round the existing shape of the drive, and look good. And as low a cost as possible please, and nothing difficult - I'm not built like Arnie! Recycled/environmentally friendly options also gratefully considered!
Any ideas?
We did exactly this on our drive (or rather a builder did it for us) by making a retaining wall of 3 courses of Bradstone blocks, (see http://www.aggregate.com/Our-businesses/Bradstone/Our-Products/Garden/Walling-and-Coping/garden-walling-and-coping/ )which build up quite quickly and are strong enough to retain the raised bed. They can be set to curve if you want this. As you want to go up to at least 18 ins you will need to build a strong retaining wall of some kind of brick or blocks, and set it on concrete footings. The pressure of the earth behind will mean that a less permanenet solution will not be satisfactory, and a proper wall will anyway enhance your house value. There are lots of different colours and textures of blocks available if you look online or visit a builder's merchant. Like yours, the soil at the base of ours was very poor, and filling the space behind the wall with good soil has made a fantastic difference to the garden there.
