How do I get my quarter horse to do a slow collected lope?
I have seen many quarter horses in the show ring do super slow collected loping and i was wondering how to train my mare to do that? She has not been trained to do this yet but she can do a normal lope when iam riding her just not that super slow quarter horse lope? I really would like to teach her how to do it and iam just wondering how to get started!
In order to be collected, you must first be able to be extended. The way I get horses to lope slow is first do a fast working canter/gallop around the arena and slowly (VERY gradually) bring the horse back underneath himself. This might take three laps around the arena or it could take 15! It all depends on the horse. Once your horse is loping extremely collected, let her settle into it. Take a deep breath, relax your body, but keep some sort of "go" cue on so she won't break gait. Make sure she is relaxed, you are relaxed, and ask her to slow up just a tad. When she canters slower than her usual lope, tell her "good girl" or whatever your vocal praise is but do not change your position. Hold the slow lope for just the right length of time, and then either go back to your regular lope, or walk and pat her.
Keep in mind that there is NO way you can achieve this in one day, or even one week. Take your time, but ask more of her each ride. Eventually, she will learn to slow herself down and perform a collected sloooow lope, like all those pleasure horses
