Purpose Plain

What is all purpose flour? what is the difference between it and self raising or plain?

i want to make a chocolate and banana cake but the recipe says all-purpose flour, but i only have self raising or plain. what is the difference please, and cud i use plain or self raishing instead? thanks, im making it for my mums birthday =]

The use of flour in food is to bulk, this basically means to help it rise. The best flour to use to make cakes is to use self raising flour because it has baking powder in it and it will make the cake rise high but plain flour is used to make biscuits. Don't use plain flour in your cake because it will be really flat. Hope this helps :)
