Is it true that, during slavery times, pregnant female slaves were sliced open in front of others?
I read that, in Barbados or maybe the other slave-breaking islands, during the days of slavery, pregnant women were sliced open and their babies killed. The account explains that, from a group of pregnant slave women, about one in ten would be chosen to be cut open in front of the others in order to instill fear in those others. The book goes on to say that the trauma of the survivors was transmitted to their unborn children. Is this true? How often did this happen? Did it happen all the time?
It did happen but not in Barbados. It happened in Arabia because that was their law. Children of black slave women were not tolerated. One of the reasons you don't see many black Saudis even today (while for example there are plenty of Yemenis or Omanis who are black) even though the Arab/Turkey slave trade formed 95% of the trade
In the case of slaves exported to China the law was even more strict- the Chinese could import only castrated males (and less than 1 in 3 survived the procedure
In Barbados (or anywhere in Americas) I very much doubt that any slave got killed just to scare others. Slaves were expensive and a pregnant woman was just a supplier of another free slave. If she "needed" to be punished they would simply chain her or put a collar on her- but definetly do nothing that would damage "expensive goods"
Of course I bet there were exceptions. But that would be individual sadism and not the law
