Leather Girth
How do I measure myself and my horse for an english saddle, stirrup leathers, stirrup irons, and girth?
I am buying my first saddle, a Thorowgood Maxam. I am pretty sure I am a 17.5" seat, and prefer a wider tree Now I need to know how to measure my horse so I know what size girth to get, and how to measure myself for stirrup leathers. I am buying it off ebay, so what measurements should I get from the seller to insure it is a good fit?
Help, it ends in two days!
My horse is about 15 hh and is an Arab, but she is pretty wide. I am getting a wide because I want a saddle she can grow into (she is 4 y/o) and so her muscles can develop. I plan on using a theraflex pad, when I can afford one. I would rather go wide than narrow.
My main question is, how do I measure myself for stirrup leathers? And how do I measure me horse for a girth?
First of all, you know your seat size- but it does vary from saddlemaker to saddlemaker - a 17.5 collegiate isnt the same as a 17.5 Albion or Passier..Secondly are you positive that a wide tree fits your horse? Its not going to do YOU any good if the saddle fits you but doesnt fit your horse.Have you tried a wide tree saddle on your horse & has someone checked it to make sure you are correct? A sore horse is not worth the price of an Ebay deal!
The girth is also measured to your horse - depending on the length of the billets.If you currently have a leather girth,there might be a number stamped into the non elasticised end of the girth.That will be your girth measurement.
Stirrups - that will depend on how wide your boot is - most average people do well with 4 3'4 - some need 5 inches across.
Stirrup leathers will also depend on your discipline - but generally for adults range in the 52 -54 inch range ,with either 3/4 or 1 in width.Thats based primarily on preference.
