Lauren Jumping

Critique my jump position, please? (:?

This is my second time jumping... ever.... there are no Hunter jumper instructors near me, although i am taking dressage lessons. I've been doing western, dressage, and training greenies for the past 4 years (hence no jumping). I know my leg needs work, but I'd like some more specific critique? This horse is a very spirited arabian. Most of the jumps are around 20", the highest I went was 2'

THANKS!!!

It's a bit tricky to tell what's going on from that angle.

From what I can see though, you need to get yourself back towards the saddle more. Right now you are flinging yourself forward onto your horse's neck, and coming right up out of the saddle.
For that height, all you really need to do is get your weight down into your heels, and come just slightly out of the saddle, folding from the hips.

You say you are having trouble with your lower leg, and this is almost definitely because of this throwing yourself forward. As you've gone too far forward, your legs have crept right back to try and accomodate it. Meaning if your horse had a bit of a stumble or a refusal you would be very likely having a meeting with the ground.
By just folding from the hips and letting the movement take you, you will have an altogether far more controlled position - and should something go wrong you are there and able to sit up and go with it.

You also seem to come down very far onto your horse's neck, again likely from coming too far forward, hence this is going to encourage your horse to land quite steeply and encourage a stumble - making it hard for him to make a good get away from the fence.

It's just this staying back a bit in the saddle you really need to work on - if you can get that core stability and balance you will have a very nice position.
