Hunting Breastplate
going hunting and need stronger bit (brakes)!?
i'm planning to take my 17 hand warm blood hunting for the first time,he is a big forward going chap and i am concerned that he may get too strong for me over the four hours out hunting.i currently ride him in a snaffle with a crossed nose band,running martingale and breastplate.
i took him on a training exercise at the weekend, long canters with two horses he hadn't met before,he was well behaved apart from a couple of cheeky bucks,the only problem was that after a while i felt i couldn't hold onto him for much longer as he pulls and my arms were numb with pain! i need to keep good contact due to his propensity to buck or take off!
can anyone help?
i have no idea where to start,i don't want to put him in anything painful or that could make matters worse.
my friend uses a myler bit which has improved her mares outline,not sure if it has helped her brakes though...

You don't need a different bit, you need to work with your horse a bit more before hunting with him. Cantering in the open along with other horses is an invitation for him to get high in the first place, so he needs more work at home before going on a hunt, either alone or with other horses. At home, work on his ability to stay light and responsive in turning, stopping and backing. If your arms are numb with pain, that means that you are not being light on his mouth, and because of that, he isn't responding to you either. Work more on your hands, lighten up and he will become more responsive to you. If you work with him more and feel that he is ready to go hunting and along the way, he attempts to run off or go faster than you are asking him to, don't pull on him, just use one rein and then the other to force him to take a step or two one way, then the other, this will slow him down without your having to pull on him...and don't let him get out of hand and going too fast before you attempt to slow him down. Good luck, sounds like lots of fun, but don't do it until you and your horse are ready.
