lungeing with side reins?
okay when i lunge my horse with a caveson, surcingle and side reains, do i attach the side reins directly to the bit
yes.
I put a bridle without a cavesson under the lunging cavesson, and attach the side reins to the bit, but the lunge line to the front of the nose. This helps to teach the horse to learn to trust the bit. The lunge line on the front of the cavesson allows you to bring the horse's head in slightly, engaging the outside rein, thus giving half of a halfhalt, and you make it a full halfhalt by doing the softening on the cavesson and then pushing the engagement either with the lunge whip or voice.
