English Stirrups
Whats the difference between English and Western riding?
I am 17 years old and was lucky enough to land a lease on a horse where I get him three nights a week in exchange for one riding lesson for her son 
I have not ridden in over a year though, so im expecting to be a bit rusty the next time i ride. I took English lessons in the beginning, when I was 9-11 years old, and after that I rode western pleasure, and have only been in an English saddle maybe 3 times since I was 11.
This horse I am leasing can ride both English and Western, but i am wanting to "re-learn" in English, mostly because I want a change of pace but also because Showjumping interests me
I am nervous because I know that English stirrups need to be shorter then they do with western riding. there's also no horn, which is something I heavily rely on when a horse is bucking- I usually put my open hand on the top to help steady myself, so I'm nervous about this as well.
Any advice on changing from western to english?
i show all around, so i can help. every show, i am changing from one to the other. if you are nervous, start in a western saddle, work on your balance, the switch into the english saddle. its all about balance, plus the horse will mostlikely be calm cause its a all arounder and a lease horse. sit deep, use your legs, and don't rely on your hands/arms to save you. being in the horse industry means that you will get bucked off, so get over that. i have had nasty falls, but i have never been afraid to get back on, if you are, take up a different sport.
EDIT- harriet is WRONG, i compete at a VERY high level for western and english. when i want a day to relax with my horse, i ride english cause it isn't a demanding on the horses gaits/carriage. both are for competing, and both can be used for 'hacks'
