How........can.........? ?
How can I show my parents that I'm responsible enough for a horse? I also would need to be able to buy and support 50% of the ongoing upkeep at the present time? Raising money with horses involved would be ideal. I make brow-bands but.. that alone isn't enough. I'm not currently old enough to work in/at a buisness.
I already have weekly lessons at my local riding school, and help look after quite a few miniatures at my schools stud
Maybe leasing a horse first. That way you don't own it, but have almost the same responsibilities you would if you had your own. It is usually a lot cheaper. Some stables will let you work half the board off, but isn't common. If you're not old enough to work a regular job, then I don't know what to tell you. If you're experienced enough, then maybe ask your barn if you may start giving beginner lessons to make some cash. If you're desperate enough, you might be able to work at two or three barns a day, depending on how long you need to work.
Do you know how much keeping a horse a month is? Where we live I spend around $330 for hay, $45 for grain, around $130 for shoes, and $25 for hoof trim a month per horse. Hay and grain prices will vary depending what kind you get and how the economy is where you live. They can vary each month. Buying the cheapest stuff you can find is not good, either. Some horses require supplements as well. The supplement I give my horses is $120 a gallon and I usually buy two a month.
Bi-monthly worming cost varies on which transition you're on. Usually is not expensive.
Bi-seasonal shots are around $30 each and we give them ourselves.
Around here, to get a vet to come out to your barn is $100, and they will charge for everything they do to your horse. You need to be prepared for injuries and health problems that come along. They can happen to any horse at any time.
Getting a horse's teeth floated per year costs $80 a year with the guy we use.
If you are keeping a horse at your home, do you have a barn? Arena, pastures, etc?
Along with that, you need a saddle, bridle, blankets, saddle pads, boots, brushes, etc. along with buying the actual horse itself.
If you are boarding, then the prices vary depending on what all they offer, how the economy is, etc. Some barns around here that grow their own hay and have the basics of a horse farm are as low as $250 for full care. The barn we board at sometimes over winter which is a nice show barn, is $1100 a month.
