Bridle Halter
What is the difference between a bridle, a headstall, and a halter?
I've heard these terms used sort of interchangeably...One person referred to a halter and a headstall as the same, another said the headstall was a bridle. I know a bridle and a halter aren't the same thing by any means, though...So what's the difference between a bridle and a headstall? A headstall and a halter?
Also, if a horse is trained originally in an english bridle, how different or challenging would it be to use a western bridle (or headstall?). Would it change how you would need to ride the horse, or how the horse would respond?
(At the barn where I ride, all the horses, english and western, use english snaffle bridles, so I've been kind of confused...)
A halter is what you use to lead a horse around, trailer, tie the horse in, everyday work. There is no bit. It can be made of leather or nylon or a combination of the two.
A headstall is a western term for what you use when riding the horse. It has a bit attached to it as well as reins. (In english terms, its the same thing as a bridle.
A bridle is an english term for what you use when riding the horse to control it. A bit and reins are attached as well.
A headstall and bridle are the same thing. Just different terms for different disciplines.
If a horse is originally trained in an english bridle and switches to a western headstall you may have some difficulties. With english bridles you will use a direct rein. You have contact on the horses mouth, minimal slack in the reins, you move the horse from contact directly on the mouth. With a western headstall you use indirect reins. You normally neck rein the horse with indirect contact on the horses mouth using the shank of the bit to control the horse too. Unless you are in a western snaffle, there would be some confusion for your horse if he is not used to both types of steering.
That's basically the difference. If you need more explanation about the direct contact versus the indirect contact and how that controls the horse just ask. But I tried to keep it short to give you a basic idea of the differences.
